The Border Security Force (BSF) seized a total of 89.4 kilograms of ganja in separate anti-smuggling operations along the India-Bangladesh international border in North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts of West Bengal. The seizures were made under the South Bengal Frontier as part of routine surveillance and operations to curb cross-border narcotics movement.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the BSF said that troops of the 143rd Battalion posted at the Amudia border outpost in North 24 Parganas acted on specific intelligence inputs regarding possible smuggling activity. During the second shift of duty on Tuesday, personnel observed four to five individuals carrying large sacks towards the international boundary. The jawans issued a warning and followed standard protocol by firing a warning shot. The suspects abandoned the sacks and fled towards Amudia Ghazipara village. A search operation was immediately launched, leading to the recovery of 56 kilograms of ganja from three abandoned bundles. The seized material included 86 packets - 34 of one kilogram, 36 of 500 grams, and 16 of 250 grams.
In separate operations, BSF troops recovered 28.4 kilograms of ganja from the Boripota and Raninagar border outposts under the 11th Battalion. Additionally, five kilograms of ganja were seized from the Gede border outpost in Nadia district, which is under the 32nd Battalion. All seizures were made during night patrols and area dominance exercises carried out near the border fencing and adjoining villages.
The BSF has handed over the confiscated narcotics to the concerned enforcement agencies in accordance with legal procedures. The force continues to maintain high alert in border areas of West Bengal that are prone to smuggling activities due to their proximity to international routes.
